Sciatica Treatment with Acupuncture — Ontario, CA
Sciatica is shooting, burning, or electrical pain down the back of the leg, sometimes into the foot. It usually starts in the lower back or deep in the buttock and follows a specific path defined by which nerve root is irritated. Some people can pinpoint the moment it began; others noticed it slowly. The defining feature is that it travels — a back that just hurts isn't sciatica, even when it's severe.

Sciatica refers to nerve-related pain involving the lumbar nerve roots (L4, L5, S1) or the sciatic nerve as it passes deep to the piriformis. A careful exam helps identify which pattern is most relevant. Acupuncture may help with the local muscular and nerve-related patterns that contribute to leg pain. Many patients describe changes in numbness or tingling before deeper aching shifts. Acupuncture is best used alongside care from your physician, particularly when active nerve involvement is present.
What treatment looks like
The plan depends on whether the source is discogenic, foraminal, or piriformis-driven. Sessions commonly combine acupuncture in lumbar and gluteal points with gentle electrical stimulation along the affected nerve path, plus cupping and targeted manual work in the piriformis or QL when those are part of the picture. We're cautious with disc cases — aggressive techniques are not used when active nerve involvement is present. Treatment courses vary by case, often 6–8 sessions, with re-assessment at each visit.
When to seek immediate care
If you experience sudden weakness in the legs, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the saddle area, seek emergency care immediately. These can be signs of cauda equina syndrome, which requires urgent medical attention.
Related issues we often see with this
Patients with persistent leg pain that hasn't responded to other approaches often respond to a course of acupuncture combined with movement. Individual results vary.
